“The Southern Genteels”, T. Ellis 100 s/n prints, size  18x24

Grace and elegant, educated, refined, and respectful are the qualities that define “The Southern Genteels”. Always expressing kindness and being thoughtful of others. In French, it means “high-born”, of high social status.

As a native of New Orleans, Louisiana I am familiar with the neighborhood of Treme, the formal French name is “Treme Faubourg”, it is one of the oldest communities of “Free People of Color” in the United States. It is the birthplace of “Jazz” and harbors many more treasures. “The Southern Genteels”, used their wealth and influence to actively advance the political, economical and social interest of African Americans throughout the history of America.
