World Renown Artist and Native New Orleanian Ted Ellis Teams Up with Local Businessman and Philanthropist to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Original Painting Represents Historical Importance of Push and Pull Towards Progress in Civil and Human Rights

New Orleans, LA – Native New Orleanians Ted Ellis and Telley Madina, President of The Madina Group Consulting, have teamed up to commemorate the 60thanniversary of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.’sMarch on Washington by releasing an original piece marking the 1963 gathering of more than a quarter million people peacefully protesting for jobs and freedom near the Lincoln Memorial where Dr. King then delivered his galvanizing I Have a Dream speech.

As the inaugural Director of the new Florida State University (FSU) Civil Rights Institute, and an artist of more than 35 years artistically and deliberately chronicling the historical narratives of the plight of African Americans, Ellis is further codifying with this piece the importance of the commitment of the Big Six to fight against structural racism and inequality and the juxtaposition of how sixty years later, that fight is still prevalent today.

“This painting speaks to the shared views of the organizers – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, (SCLC), John Lewis of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, (SNCC), AFL-CIO’s A. Philip Randolph, Whitney Young, of the National Urban League, James Farmer, of the Congress of Racial Equality, (CORE) and Roy Wilkins of the (NAACP) – and each one’s contribution to a pivotal moment in that decade that began to transform America, “ said Ellis. “I also wanted to capture that moment when thousands of Americans were holding their hand-held signs illustrating their reasons and intent for being present on that warm day in August nonviolently protesting for civil rights. My inclusion of the children at the forefront of the painting symbolically speaks to the future. This painting is also a welcome addition to my Civil Rights series of paintings that will be part of the permanent collection soon to be on exhibition at FSU’s Civil Rights Institute.”

As a commemoration, but more importantly, a continuation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work, the painting illustrates a clear message of the evaluation of progress made to achieve Dr. King's dream while continuing to highlight the work still needing to be done to bring about peace, justice, and equity in the world.

“Having been present at the 60th anniversary commemoration of the original March on Washington and leading conversations that continue to amplify one of the greatest and most consequential racial justice demonstrations in United States history, I am reminded that this isn’t about a minute in time but a moment in history that still requires calls to action and that’s why teaming up with Ted Ellis to promote the importance of his work was an easy decision,” said Madina. “This moment should foster a recommitment to prioritizing training that will position Black people to get jobs that will help them take better care of themselves and their families as well as posture them to focus more intentionally on experientially attaining freedom financially and spiritually.”

That moment in history undoubtedly provided a blueprint for engaging in constructive civil rights advocacy and activism and Dr. King’s delivery of his I Have a Dream speech set the stage for what would be viewed as the beginning of significant change to social and civil reform in the United States and abroad.
